Hammner Throw Successs

On Thursday 26th January 2023, Curtin University Athletics Club Hammer Thrower Alex De Silva took part in the Steigen Victorian Country Championships in Geelong , Victoria. The powerfully built 18-year-old took out the silver medal with a season's best throw of 53.09mtrs (6kg) A strong field of hammer throwers and a hotly contested competition, saw Alex take the lead in the final round - only to be beaten in the final throw of competition. A keen onlooker at Alex's event at Jonh Landy Athletics Field, was former Curtin throwing powerhouse and current U20 and Open Men's Hammer Throw WA State record holder, Dimitri Dionisopoulous.

Alex will spend the next month in Victoria training with Dimitri at his training base in Frankston, before returning to WA for the State athletics championships. Alex's next eastern states venture will be the Australian Athletics Championships in Brisbane in May.

Alex is the grandson of three-time Australian Shot-Put champion Alex Brown - a long-time friend and rival of the late Matt Barber.

World Masters Championship 2022 (Finland):

The Curtin University Athletic Club would like to congratulate Maureen Keshwar (an affiliate of our club) who won gold in the the W70 100m with a time of 16.21 seconds.

Tom Lenane (Masters Coach) and Kim Taylor (Senior Coach) have provided quality support to assist Maureen improve her amazing speed. We are all very proud of this significant achievement.

We would also like to congratulate Mandy Mason (a club member) who won silver in the W50 100m with a time of 12.92 seconds and gold in the W50 4X100m relay with a time of 50.60 seconds.

Olympic Team Selection:

The Curtin University Athletic Club would also like congratulate our friend and fellow teammember Kiara Reddingius who was recently named in the Australian Winter Olympic team. Kiara, your hard work and dedication inspire us all to achieve our personal best.
